Learningscenario

A Greener Playground

This Learning Scenario envisions transforming a large, unshaded section of a primary school’s cemented playground in northern Greece into a green oasis for students, teachers, and the community. By utilizing unused spaces to introduce trees, bushes, and benches, the plan aims to create a relaxing environment for socializing, learning, and enjoying nature. Beyond providing much-needed shade on hot summer days, this initiative promotes outdoor, nature-based education, offering opportunities for more engaging and differentiated lessons while enhancing the overall well-being of the school and its surroundings.

How Cool is your School? Getting Ready for Heatwaves!

This Learning Scenario aims to educate students about environmental challenges related to rising surface temperatures. Activities entail a teacher training in the first week, and then several phases of data collection, expert learning sessions on heatwaves and urban heat islands, and collaborative data sharing via the GLOBE Observer app.1 Students engage in researching and proposing nature-based solutions (NBS) to mitigate heat in their school environment, culminating in presentations to school leadership and the creation of a practical guide for younger students

The Great Green Roof Challenge

In this Learning Scenario, students explore climate change and the impact of nature-based solutions (NBS) by designing and constructing green roof models for a local community center. Through this hands-on project, they investigate the numerous benefits of green roofs as an example of nature-based solutions. Students gather ideas and design models to demonstrate how transforming a community center with a green roof can mitigate the effects of climate change. They then test their models to measure temperature differences between green roofs and traditional roofs, showcasing the effectiveness of this NBS. By doing so, students not only develop STEM skills but also enhance their environmental awareness.
