Effectiveness of Green Cover on Water Retention in Cities

Many cities suffer the consequences of a flood after a large amount of water falls in a short period of time. This Learning Scenario aims to study which plant species are capable of storing the greatest amount of water in the soil in our city, in order to maximize the effectiveness of water retention in cities by the green cover (plants and vegetation that help absorb and retain water), putting into practice nature-based solutions (NBS). To do this, a humidity sensor is built with Arduino (open source electronic platform) and measurements of humidity and water infiltration capacity are made in the soils around different species of trees and shrubs.

Exploring ecosystem services and nature-based solutions to urban problems

The purpose of this learning scenario is to explore an urban ecosystem of a city, analysing its ecosystem services and determining whether it acts as a nature-based solution (NBS) to challenges such as diminishing biodiversity, urban heat islands and urban decay. This Learning Scenario was developed as part of the Integrating Nature-Based Solutions in Education project, funded by the European Commission Directorate-General for Research and Innovation and coordinated by PPMI, in collaboration with European Schoolnet (EUN).

Exploring the role of nature-based solutions in Lake Sevan through Armenian literature

This Learning Scenario (LS) explores nature-based solutions in Armenian literature for 9th-grade students, utilizing various methods like problem-based learning and project-based learning. It enhances critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills while addressing real-world environmental challenges, offering inspiration for similar approaches in other countries.

Global Thinkers, Local Solvers: You want an ideal city? Solve the problems of your city!

This Learning Scenario aims to promote the concept of inclusive city through participatory design. Creating sustainable inclusive cities is vital for achieving collectively agreed sustainability goals at local, regional, and global scales. Cities are not isolated; they interact extensively with their surroundings and increasingly with the rest of the world. However, urban development has resulted in the degradation of the environment and peri-urban space, leading to environmental and social challenges such as traffic congestion, air pollution, overconsumption, discrimination, and inappropriate urban planning. To mitigate these challenges, we must create inclusive, environmentally friendly, and economically sustainable cities, which can pave the way for a more sustainable future for the planet. This Learning Scenario is based on a project undertaken by six kindergartens from Greece and Turkey, involving 18 early childhood educators. A total of 160 children participated by envisioning a city that is accessible, sustainable, ecological, emotional, and smart: the “City of their Dreams.”
