The ‘Whole School Approach’ in NBS Education

How can NBS EduWORLD effectively promote the whole school approach to nature-based solution (NBS) education? This question was the focus of our recent Advisory Board meeting, where many ideas and strategies were discussed.

What is the Whole School Approach?

The Whole School Approach aims to integrate ecological practices into everyday school life. Hands-on activities, such as school gardens and environmental projects, help students develop a greater awareness of sustainability. By integrating NBS and sustainability into the curriculum across different subjects, students not only gain knowledge but also develop the skills needed to create sustainable solutions.

Ideas for implementing the approach

One innovative approach is the creation of NBS Living Labs. These spaces within schools allow students, teachers and community members to work together to solve local environmental problems and develop sustainable practices. NBS Living Labs provide a real-world context for learning, where theoretical knowledge meets practical application, fostering a deeper understanding of environmental issues and solutions.

In addition, partnerships with sports clubs and other community organisations can extend environmental education and provide multiple opportunities for engagement. These collaborations can help bring environmental practices into different aspects of students' lives, reinforcing the importance of sustainability beyond the classroom. Furthermore, visual tools that depict sustainable futures play a crucial role in these efforts. They can inspire and mobilise policy makers and educational institutions to take concrete steps towards a more sustainable educational landscape. By presenting compelling visual narratives, we can make the abstract concept of sustainability more tangible and motivating for all stakeholders. Direct communication and collaboration with schools, especially in regions with low use of digital platforms, is essential. This can include organising workshops and face-to-face meetings that build trust and active participation in NBS initiatives. Face-to-face interactions are particularly effective in building strong relationships and ensuring that all voices are heard and valued.

To support these initiatives, it's important to provide resources and training for teachers and school administrators. This will ensure that they have the knowledge and skills to effectively integrate NBS into their teaching and school activities. Professional development opportunities can help educators stay informed about the latest developments in sustainability education and NBS.Continuous review and adaptation of our strategies is key to the success of the Whole School Approach. This involves regularly assessing the impact of our initiatives and making necessary adjustments to improve their effectiveness.Through the Whole School Approach, schools can play a vital role in tackling the climate crisis and shaping a future-oriented education.
